Surgical Tools' mission is to develop products which improve clinical outcomes for patients selecting breast-conserving surgery (BCS) over mastectomy, despite the known increased risks associated with BCS, such as surgical re-excision and local recurrence of breast cancer.  Specifically, Surgical Tools is developing products that enable three dimensional intra-operative radiographic margin assessment of excised breast tissue, as well as intraoperative microscopic margin assessment at the cellular level through spectroscopy.  Our objective is to reduce surgical re-excision and local recurrence rates in BCS by more than a factor of two in the next 3 years.


BlueBox specimen container provides:

1. ORTHOGONAL X-RAY IMAGING of surgically excised specimens, improving radiographic margin assessment in both dimensions.

2. GENTLE COMPRESSION of specimens, eliminating the potential for false positives due to excessive compression.

3. THREE DIMENSIONAL ORIENTATION MARKERS incorporated into the specimen container itself, saving precious operating room time, and improving communications between the surgeon, radiologist, and pathologist
